TRAINING TIPS:

• Start in a quiet area without too many distractions
• Attach your long line to or dog's regular flat collar or harness (NEVER to a choke chain)
• Allow him/her to wander away from you (only a short distance to start), call their name loud enough to get their attention, and then give a recall command (e.g. "come")
• Back away from your dog, encouraging him/her towards you as you go
• If the dog is reluctant to come, gently use the long line to "reel" him/her in
• Once he/she has reached you, reward with a food treat or a game with a favorite toy to reinforce the good behavior
• Gradually extend the distances from which you allow the dog to reach as positive behavior allows
• Practice in new areas, gradually increasing the level of distraction
• Once your dog is responding well, you can drop the line so it is trailing behind him/her
• If the dog ignores you, calmly walk toward him/her until you can pick up the line
• Repeat your command and immediately reel him/her in and reward
• If your dog ignores you frequently, go back to holding onto the line at all times for a few days before you try again
• Work in short sessions so neither you nor your dog get frustrated, as that frustration comes right down the leash and your efforts will be minimized
